    Crossing the Jordan River


    (my first short story i ever wrote. not very good but i wrote it anyway.)



    Prison writing.

    I have been teaching in Sing Sing prison for the last month. Writing Workshop for Certificate Program. I think that was the title of the course. How do you teach writing? You do a lot of reading.

    Prison writing. My class wrote an essay about writing in prison. They read Mumia’s essay on writing in prison. Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos on the words as our weapon. A letter to Leonard. A missive. They read a short story by Susan Rosenberg. Lee’s Time. She is free now.

    That is one of the things about prison life. There is a lot of time. Or so they say. What you do with that time makes all the difference. You can spend years languishing in the “system,” moving from one prison to another. Drugs, sex, violence, love, death – you name it – we have it.

    So when do you decide to take time into your own hands, you start doing time very differently. You leave time behind for a moment. Out of the shadows into the light. See your family. Touch your wife. Play with your kids. Start living.

    Writing can be a powerful tool.
    You can see right through the prison bars and look out over the Hudson River . Sometimes you might hear a sound that you don’t recognize. But it is the cry of a baby bird. That’s all. Not your child crying in the night. You have to weep inside your jail cell or not at all.

    No sounds. Just tears rolling down you cheeks. You saw your daughter today. “Daddy,” she said, “What are you doing.”

    “My homework.” It is about this guy named Leonard. Writing an essay. 5 paragraph essay. Topic sentence. Thesis. Conclusion.
    I think about what I want to do when I get out of here. I think I will help young people. Be some kind of counselor. I have a lot of experience. I want to share it with them so they won't make the same mistakes I made.

    I “Liberate yourself from mental slavery.”

    I am free associating. That was what the assignment said we should do. Free writing. Do not stop writing for 10 minutes. I find it hard to keep the pen going. Let along a computer. The spiritual practice. Discipline. So that is what he wants to teach us.

    I will get my writing certificate tomorrow night. I finished the course. A noun is a person, place or thing. Active verbs. I ran around the yard today. Lifted weights. Spoke to my people. Then I went back to my cell. I started writing. Where does that fucking comma go? Weak and strong clauses. Or restrictive and subordinate clauses.

    The guard called my name, actually the name I go by, from a special list. I stepped out of my cell and stood in the hall. The guard said something I didn’t like.

    I said, “I want to go to the school.”
    “You think you smarter than I am?” he said.
    “No, I just need to go cuz my grammar is bad and I am trying to learn about adjectives and adverbs and conjunctions and interjections!” I replied.

    I want to be a poet.

    So I read a lot of poetry. Listen to music. Lyrics. Rap. Classical. Read a poem by a guy named Walt. Pretty good. I heard he was from Brooklyn . I am from Brooklyn too.
    But things have changed since Walt died.

    Still, he was some kind of medic in the civil war. Came back a poet, they say. Or there was this guy – Saint Thomas of Assisi – went to war and came back a saint. There are no saints in sing sing.

    I am trying to write without stopping but I don’t have much more to say.

    I see the sun setting over the mountains across the wide river. One day I plan to cross that river. Now, I just sail over it in my mind. I kinda like that. I feel free for a moment.

    10 minutes is up. Time to go to afternoon program. I am finished. I hope he came today. I want my certificate. I just wanna show it to my girl. And my wife.
